the Floor Together is a collaboration between creative Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people from Canberra and surrounds, plus visiting dancers from around Australia.
A new full-length contemporary youth dance work, is being imagined and created by independent choreographer Dean Cross, Daniel Riley McKinley of Bangarra Dance Theatre and Deon Hastie of Kurruru Youth Performing Arts, with Artistic Director Ruth Osborne.
“These young people are determining the future, with an understanding of the present. Evoking their hopes and dreams, despite differences in culture, geography and understanding, Hit the Floor Together will move your heart and mind”
It is being developed in collaboration with the 2013 Quantum Leap youth dance ensemble from QL2 Dance who will perform it — young dancers from Canberra and the region, together with visiting dancers from NAISDA in Gosdford, Kurruru in Adelaide, Wagambirra in Cowra, and others from as far afield as Melbourne and Byron Bay.
We want Canberra to experience the depth, complexity, passion and possibilities of contemporary youth dance, and to appreciate this next generation of Australian artists in our midst. Get your tickets now!
Origins
Hit the Floor Together was initiated by ex-Canberra Indigenous dancer and choreographer, Daniel Riley McKinley. He started with QL2 in our Quantum Leap programs, and is now a leading emerging Indigenous choreographer and dancer, part of Bangarra Dance Theatre. In 2009 he wanted to “give back” to the Canberra community, bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous dancers through QL2. Hit the Floor Together has given QL2 Dance an opportunity to follow through on Daniel’s vision.
Hit the Floor Together is a Centenary of Canberra project, proudly supported by the ACT Government; and part of the subscription season Collected Works: Australia at Canberra Theatre Centre.
