REVIEW - QL2 DANCE ‘ON COURSE’ 17 DECEMBER 2011
Being offered fifteen short dances by different choreographers in one program is pretty exciting, but a bit daunting, too. How, I wondered, can they make possibly make so many items individually memorable? Well, for the most part, QL2 Dance’s evening of dance, ‘On Course’, certainly achieved it for me.
Now in its fourth year, ‘On Course’ brings together current dance students from tertiary institutions across Australia to choreograph, collaborate and perform. Some current Quantum Leapers also get the opportunity to be involved as dancers, working alongside the tertiary students.
With so many dances on offer, it’s impossible to mention each one here, so I’ll talk only about the ones that come to mind in this moment. If I talked about it tomorrow, I’d probably mention different ones. That’s how interesting they all were.
Mackenzie Burn presented her work, ‘Jack’, which was inspired by a young autistic boy. Here, all the elements – concept, dance and music - combined perfectly to provide a thought-provoking work about the challenges faced by an autistic person in this world. ‘Living With Lucy’ by choreographer, Sean Gearon, effectively showed the highs and lows of a relationship between two people. Mercie Taylor’s ‘Breeze’, a solo work, was particularly notable for her graceful and controlled dancing. It was a pleasure to watch her work.
I particularly enjoyed the concept of, ‘Reports Are Unconfirmed’, by Ashleigh Musk and Courtney Sheu about the daily ritual of reading a newspaper. I loved the imaginative images created in this piece of newspaper pages falling like leaves. ‘What Is Contemporary Dance?’ was an amusing attempt to answer an impossible question. Choreographer, Joel Fenton, provided us with a quirky, imaginative and very enjoyable dance that had the audience laughing out loud on a couple of occasions.
I missed the first item ‘…In Wonderland’, which was presented in the foyer before we entered the theatre. I was busy gasbagging as usual and, with the noise of the rest of the waiting audience, didn’t realize that we should have been watching this foyer performance at the other end of the room. The item was listed in the program, but I hadn’t opened it yet. Maybe an announcement could have been made to capture our attention. Maybe there was an announcement, but I didn’t hear it.
Each choreographer introduced themselves and their individual works, a nice touch, but, as the introductions are part of the performance, it’s not a good look to come onstage clutching your water bottle.
Once again, QL2 Dance provided a quality and entertaining evening of dance. The enthusiastic applause at the end of the evening was well-deserved by choreographers and dancers alike. I’m looking forward to seeing what QL2 Dance has for us in 2012.

REVIEW – QUANTUM LEAP ‘HOT TO TROT’ 26 NOVEMBER 2011
I have a problem with dance. If it doesn’t engage me quickly, my mind is off wandering and I might as well not be there. Luckily, I had no such problems last night at Quantum Leap’s program, ‘Hot To Trot’.
Quantum Leap’s ‘Hot To Trot’ is an opportunity for their dancers, who have experienced working with professional choreographers in a collaborative process, to explore their own choreographic potential. Last night’s program presented nine short pieces, each distinctive in their style and content.
I was particularly interested in the conceptual originality of each piece. Basic ideas and themes were given an appropriate extra dimension with accompanying lighting, music, commentary and, in some cases, film. The dance melded beautifully with all these elements providing an entertaining and, at times, thought-provoking experience.
There are some startling images from these dances that have stayed in my head. Tamar Peacock fighting with her own shadow on the wall in her piece about fear of the dark, ‘Achluophobia’, Tori Lee’s group of dancers, each coping with a physical disability in ‘Limitations’ and Ryan Stone reacting to a spooky projected film of his partner, Jess Stone, in ‘Night Terror’.
Harry Morrissey choreographed and danced a particularly engaging piece called ‘Changing Deviant Behaviour’ which showed two teenagers in complete contrast – one on film unmotivated and disorganised and the other, danced by Harry, organised and prompt.
Not every piece was designed to be thought-provoking. There was the sheer fun of ‘Boogie Nights’ by Alana Stenning with an excellent take-off of the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ era of dance with Ryan Stone in the white suit and accompanying dancers obviously having a good time.
I did wonder if those who choreographed and danced their own pieces might be missing out on the important and different experience that comes from directing a group of dancers other than themselves.
In each piece, the discipline and hard work of the dancers was very evident. You don’t have to make allowances for anyone in this company. They all give 100 percent and it shows.
It was a nice touch to have each choreographer introduce each of their pieces and at the end of the evening, dancers and choreographers were available on stage to discuss their work with the audience.
I left the theatre last night knowing that dance has an assured future after seeing the work of these young and dedicated choreographers and dancers.

Sara Black
Contemporary technique workshop
Sunday 28 August | 10am | $20
Award-winning contemporary dancer Sara Black is offering just one workshop in Canberra. This will be an exciting and challenging contemporary technique workshop, followed by a discussion forum—a chance to ask questions about university study and life as a professional dancer.
Originally from Canberra, Sara started dancing aged 14 at Canberra Dance Development Centre, and was an early Quantum Leaper and participant in ‘On Course’ and ‘Soft Landing’. Since graduating from Victorian College of the Arts, she has worked with independent artists Solon Ulbrich, Antony Hamilton, Neil Adams, Byron Perry, and Cadi McCarthy, as well as Lucy Guerin Inc, Not Yet It’s Difficult, and Chunky Move. Sara was awarded Best Female Dancer in a Dance or Physical Theatre Production for ‘Glow’ at the 2008 Helpmann Awards and was nominated for a Green Room Award. She is a founding member of Rogue, dance collective and has performed in Chunky Move’s ‘Black Marrow’, ‘Mortal Engine’ and ‘Mix Tape’.
“The moment Sara Black steps on stage, we are immediately reminded how the very best dancers have the ability to pair power with vulnerability, to find light and shade within the most complex movement sequences, and somehow imbue abstract gestures with an emotional expression.” THE AGE

QL2 Dance wins two Australian Dance Awards
QL2 Dance was recognised for excellence in contemporary youth dance practice last night in Brisbane, winning two out of the ten prestigious Australian Dance Awards announced at a packed ceremony at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
QL2 Dance Artistic Director Ruth Osborne was recognised with the 2011 Award for Services to Dance “For her superlative teaching and wide-ranging services to dance for over four decades; for an outstanding contribution to dance education and to the development of youth dance practice in Australia.”
Ruth has devoted her professional life to youth dance, challenging old ideas and developing new methods. She is passionate about recognising and nurturing the nascent artist in each young dancer, and valuing their unique viewpoint, critical thinking and creativity alongside development of physical technique, self-discipline and choreograohic awareness.
QL2’s 2010 junior youth dance project Hard Yards was recognised with the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth or Community Dance “For the joy and vitality of the many young performers, and for the deep understanding of personal stories told through dance in a well-constructed and entertaining show.”
In October 2010, the iconic Yarralumla Woolshed was transformed by Hard Yards: a unique dance performance about working hard and slacking off. 45 dancers aged eight to eighteen from Canberra and Cowra collaborated with choreographers Liz Lea and Dean Cross, together with Artistic Director Ruth Osborne, to create the work which showed to packed houses.

Get your audition form in! Chaos: 40 young dancers, great choreographers
More here! and get an audition form here.
Our “Chaos” project each year gives younger and less experienced dancers a great opportunity to get into our unique program, building confidence and skills in a creative and physically challenging environment. For many, it can be a natural progression to Quantum Leap in later years. And plenty of older dancers are involved as well — challenging themselves, and inspiring the younger ones.
It’s all good is an exploration of how we talk about what we feel. Do you really mean what you say? Language changes every day. How do we know what anyone means?
The choreographers
We’ve got three wonderful choreographers to work with Artistic Director Ruth Osborne. Caitlin Mackenzie was a Quantum Leaper with QL2 from 2004. As a QUT graduate, she was in our Soft Landing program, and was a member of Link Dance Company in WA. She was in an award-winning work in Short Sweet + Dance, Sydney, and in Garry Stewart’s film Collision Course. Chafia Brookes was in Quantum Leap in 2000, and graduated from QUT. She is an independent artist who has worked throughout Australia and overseas, with Claire Marshall, Joseph Lau, Ricky Sim and Dancers (Singapore), Rebecca Hilton, Sela Kiek and Expressions Dance Company. Gabe Comerford is an emerging artist who has been involved with QL2’s Soft Landing and On Course projects. A QUT graduate, he has worked with Compagnié MADO in New Caledonia, Dancenorth, and Brisbane based MakeShift Dance Collective. He also made the Top 40 of So You Think You Can Dance Australia.
The performances
Theatre 3, Acton. Suitable for families, primary & secondary students
Friday 21 October @ 7pm and Saturday 22 October @ 3pm & 6pm..
How to get into “It’s all good”
In the audition workshop, we will lead you through a dance class and some fun creative games. You don’t have to prepare— but it will help if you are doing some dance or movement classes before you start. We want lots of different kinds of dancers to have a go. The audition is free.

Application due Friday 11 March! So do it now!
Audition Sunday 27 March
IDENTIFY will be a triple bill. Each work will look at how you identify yourself: where you came from, where you are going, who you are online.
Application due Friday 11 March! So do it now!
We are looking for energetic, physical, creative and talented young people who want to collaborate with professional artists and other young people to create and perform new contemporary dance. You don’t have to be a highly trained dancer when you start, but you’ll join a group who work hard to make great dance, building their bodies and stretching their minds. There will be creative projects and ongoing mentoring, plus classes to develop your technique, strength and fitness.
We select a wide range of enthusiastic, determined young people with training, experience or aptitude in movement, for example: contemporary dance, street funk, classical ballet, hip-hop, jazz dance, gymnastics, Martial arts, circus.
We welcome young people from Canberra and the region around— dancers travel from the NSW south coast, Cowra, Young, Canowindra, Blue Mountains and Sydney to participate. We also have a Visiting Dancer program for intensive visits by more experienced dancers from further afield.
IDENTIFY
This is the major project for our Quantum Leap ensemble for the year. After auditions in March, it will culminate in a performance season at “The Q” theatre in August.
Choreographer Adam Wheeler (Artistic Director of 2ndToe Dance Collective ) has developed the first piece, 'Toes on the Edge', in January. Jodie Farrugia (Flying Fruit Fly Circus) has worked with another group in February.
The third work, by acclaimed Sydney-based choreographer, Anton (Legs on the Wall, Tasdance) , will be developed in the April and July school holidays with all newly-auditioned dancers, plus experienced Quantum Leapers. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE!
The group will be joined for the last weeks by visiting dancers from Bangkok Dance Academy, Maya Dance Theatre (Singapore), and dancers from tertiary courses around Australia. Video producers Bearcage Productions will design and produce a video component, and there will be an original music score.
Application due Friday 11 March (No applications will be accepted on the day of the audition.)
Audition Sunday 27 March 1–6pm. There is no cost to attend the audition, which will be in the form of a dance workshop — a letter with further details will be sent when you apply.
Production & performance week: Sunday 31 July – Saturday 6 August (Sunday 9am–6pm, Monday 3–6pm, Tuesday 9–6pm, Wednesday – Friday 9am–9pm, Saturday 12–9pm & cast party till 11pm)
Classes are essential!
Doing class consistently is vital to develop as a dancer and as a choreographer. If you are not doing quality dance training elsewhere, you will need to do our classes to get into the project, and to keep up so you can be selected for special projects.
You will need to demonstrate to the Artistic Director that you are doing adequate training. This is enforced to make sure everyone develops the necessary techniques to work safely and effectively in the project and to maintain the high standards expected of QL2 productions.
Cost
The total participation cost for the project is $350. This is heavily subsidised, and includes a project T-shirt and QL2 hoodie.
Classes are $84–120/term depending on term length ($12/class) when paid in advance — see our separate classes flier.
Optionally, you can also buy a DVD of the work for $30, and a CD of photos for $10.
Bursaries are available for financial hardship.
Opportunities for Quantum Leapers
Once you are a Quantum Leaper, you are in the running for all kinds of special opportunities. These include our young choreographers’ support program Hot to Trot; master classes by visiting dance companies; highlight health promotion performance at the ACT Youth Dance Festival; a forum on dance careers with professional dancers; and discounted tickets to quality dance performances.
Programs for younger dancers
We also offer classes and projects for younger dancers. Our major project for ages 9+ is “It’s all good” in September–October. To be ready for audition, enrol in our classes!
Financial Hardship?
We are a non-profit organisation, and keep prices very reasonable. However, we know cost may still be an obstacle. We offer a Bursary system to assist you financially if cost prevents you being in our programs. To make an appointment to discuss this, please contact us.

"On Course" grew out of QL2's "Hot To Trot" program, where senior Quantum Leap dancers create short works -- seen at the end of November in Canberra. Artistic Director Ruth Osborne decided to open it up to Quantum Leapers who had left Canberra to study, and wanted to 'come home' to show what they were doing. And now, dancers around Australia who have heard about it from Quantum Leapers are wanting to be part of it, so we created "On Course" specially for them.

Exciting a Blush
Thursday at 19:00 - 14 August at 20:00
QL2 Theatre, Gorman House Arts Centre
Ainslie Avenue, Braddon
New performance collective Autumnal are returning home to present their new dance work, Exciting a Blush.
Five individuals intersect in moments of heightened self-awareness where bodies can betray their keepers by unintentionally broadcasting internal emotions.
Examining what we think of what others think of us, why we care, and why on earth that should affect the capillaries in our cheeks, Exciting a Blush explores the physiology and psychology behind the most peculiar of human expressions, the blush.
Capturing moments of awkwardness, modesty, social blunders and sexual awakenings amidst brand new dance and music, this dance theatre work is Autumnal's debut.
Originating from Canberra, Autumnal members are now carving out their place in Australia’s artistic landscape. Emerging as some of Australia's most exciting new dance artists having performed, collaborated and toured for the likes of Buzz Dance Theatre, Tasdance, Shaun Parker, Lucy Guerin, Clare Dyson, Anton, and Narrelle Benjamin, as well as undertaking their own creative endeavours through both local and international residencies.
Exciting a Blush marks the return of these artists to Canberra, where their careers were ignited and kick started through QL2's Quantum Leap and Soft Landing initiatives. Autumnal's ties to Canberra as a home place, training place, and arts place, have brought them back to share with the community their talent and creative vision, as they proudly return home to make their debut.
Exciting a Blush is also the choreographic debut from Autumnal member Angela Goh. Emerging with a vibrant creative voice, Angela's work is “a treasure... articulate... unforced... with a great respect for the natural workings of the body”.
Composer James Brown, an accomplished sound designer, photographer and animator has collaborated with theatre companies nationally and internationally. He joins Autumnal to create an original score for Exciting a Blush, which also features live music by classically trained soprano and Autumnal member Eleanor Wood.
Autumnal bring their grace, sincerity, fire and youth to this spirited new production making it an essential experience for any one interested in the beautiful, the daring, or the human.
Autumnal gratefully acknowledges the support of

QL2 Centre for Youth Dance (Canberra) and Maya Dance Theatre (Singapore) present
Standing in line in order of height
Book now online:
Bringing together Western contemporary dance and Asian classical dance, Standing in line in order of height explores conformity versus individualism in Singaporean and Australian culture.
Choreographers Kavitha Krishnan from Singapore, Ruth Osborne from Australia and Liz Lea from the UK have developed the work with dancers from Australia and Singapore in a collaboration between Maya Dance Theatre and QL2 Centre for Youth Dance.

BACKGROUND
Developed through a collaboration between QL2 Centre for Youth Dance and Maya Dance Theatre, the project aims to develop choreographic skills and cross-cultural links between the young dancers: from QUT in Australia we have Hannah Peake, Robert King, Sheriden Newman and Jason Wood who will join four dancers from La Salle College of the Arts in Singapore: Khairul Shahrin, Sufri Juwahir, Adeline Yee, Wei Ling and Samantha Teo.
Maya’s Creative Director Kavitha Krishnan has worked in traditional Asian and contemporary forms in Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Taiwan and South Africa. QL2’s Artistic Director Ruth Osborne is recognised in Australia and internationally for her collaborative work with young people. Working from London and resident in Canberra for the last year, Liz Lea is an award-winning choreographer specialising in contemporary dance and Bharata Natyam classical Indian dance.
Ruth Osborne says the partnership and collaboration “exemplifies a developing new model of dance education in Australia, where university study forms part of a continuum of development for a dance artist, with other strands building strong educational connections between students and the wider ecology of dance.” And that “wider ecology” is a boon for audiences, who will see new intercultural work like Standing in line in order of height.
QL2 Centre for Youth Dance Inc in Canberra, Australia is a non-profit organisation with an 11 year track record of excellence in contemporary dance. It is home of Quantum Leap: an auditioned, selective youth dance ensemble; and to the Soft Landing program: assisting excellent dance graduates to find their creative pathway. It provides integrated programs and projects to support and develop young people in dance at all levels: young dancers from as young as eight, high school students developing their first choreographic ideas, tertiary dance students, and graduates finding their way into the dance profession. At every point, a major focus is on choreographic literacy: encouraging the development of the choreographic mind. For tertiary dance students and beyond, they also recognise the importance of dance artists building connections across the country, reaching beyond the walls of formal study in a single institution.
Maya Dance Theatre was established in late 2006 by a group of artists who are passionate about designing and presenting thought-provoking arts productions. Works by Maya showcase a range of performing art forms and genres with explorative efforts with both independent artistes as well as local and international performing arts groups. With a forte in dance, Maya Dance Theatre also delves into collaborative art performances, where different art forms are cohesively woven in the performances. Transcending cultural, ethnic and national borders, productions by Maya are steeped in strong themes and concepts that offer a distinctive approach to contemporary dance theatre.

Just a Stage
A new 45 minute dance work by and for young people.
Just a Stage is about youth, age, and teetering on the edge of the future.
Created by 38 young dancers (aged 8-16) working with professional choreographers.
Artistic Director: RUTH OSBORNE
Choreographers:
LIZ LEA (Lea Dance, London) and
DEAN CROSS (Legs on the Wall) with
MICHELLE NORRIS and SIMON READ
This project is the entry point for dancers to work and develop with QL2 Centre for Youth Dance, in preparation to joining the Centre's Quantum Leap youth dance ensemble. It provides an introduction to working with a choreographer and moving beyond just "learning the steps". Quantum Leap has produced some of the most exciting and innovative work that a young performer could be involved in, and helped young people along the path to becoming professional dance artists. But it also introduces young dancers to the process of creating new full-length dance works – the process of choreography. This is much more than just “putting steps to music” or “telling a story” — it includes thinking about concepts and emotions, creating new movement with improvisation and exercises, selecting and refining the most effective movement ideas, and of course rehearsing till it all flows. QL2 Artistic Director, Ruth Osborne, works with the ensemble to develop the skills they need to work with professional choreographers, and selects those choreographers specifically for their ability to bring out the best in young dancers — without resorting to just drilling them in ‘moves’.

“Frame Works”: dance installation at National Portrait Gallery, Canberra
3 days only. Free entry.
Frame Works is a unique series of new dance works by young artists exploring portraiture, identity and framing across the Visual Arts and Dance worlds.
These pieces are each a direct response to works from within the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, as selected by the individual dance artists. From these starting points, each of these dance pieces will embrace the biographical information that is provided about the identities of both the subject and the portrait artist, as well as exploring the broader notions of “identity”, “depiction”, and “portraiture”.
Under the combined title of Frame Works, these pieces will be presented in a range of evocative sites within the Gallery. Some of the works will last only a few minutes and will be performed in direct response to the presence of viewers, while others will run in a “durational loop” for 60 minutes at a time.
Over a four-week intensive period, the Soft Landing 2 mentoring program (at the QL2 Centre for Youth Dance) has been providing seven tertiary dance graduates with the opportunity to enrich and expand their experiences in choreography, specifically focussing on the “choreographer in solo practice”. Working in collaboration with staff from the National Portrait Gallery, each of these young dance artists is creating a stand-alone solo performance work.
Associate Director at QL2, project leader Brian Lucas, says “Soft Landing 2 will provide support and mentorship to young artists who are seeking to explore solo work. The artists are focussing on the dual territories of biographical and autobiographical creation and performance, using external portraiture as a starting point to explore the ways in which individual artistic response and creation/performance can enhance and enrich the Australian Dance and Visual Arts landscape”.

PHLUXUS DANCE COLLECTIVE is working at QL2 Centre for Youth Dance from 23 March 2009, rehearsing their critically acclaimed dance theatre work "the machine that carries the soul".
Phluxus Dance Collective is an all-female collective of young and ambitious dance artists; Chafia Brooks (ex-Quantum Leaper), Nerida Matthaei and Skye Sewell. With assistance from a QL2 "Space Grant" which is providing the reahearsal venue, Phluxus will be presenting "the machine that carries the soul" at The Street Theatre, 3 and 4 April 2009 at 6:30pm.
"the machine that carries the soul" has been described by audiences as “beautiful in its simplicity and intensity” and “wonderfully imaginative”, this dance theatre work delves into the world of the subconscious. Three young women encounter the body's physical manifestations of emotional experience. As they move through a landscape rich in textures and sounds, the differing perspectives of their journey reveals three distinct and unique movement vocabularies. PLUS a unique set made only of thousands of eggshells.
The Canberra season follows on from multi-award winning seasons at The Age Melbourne Fringe Festival 2006, Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane 2007 and Short Sweet and Dance Sydney 2007.
“The machine that carries the soul certainly deserves the reputation it garnered at The Age Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2006. It leads the audience through different emotional phases. Rather than being self-indulgent, it is mesmerising in its examination of human interaction and feelings. As choreographers and performers, Phluxus Dance Collective unleash a gust of originality into Australian dance.”
P Escalon – JJJ The Program
the machine that carries the soul was awarded ‘Critics Choice for Best Choreography’ and the 2007 Short Sweet and Dance Festival in Sydney and "Highly Commended" (runner up, Best Dance/Movement Performance) at The Age Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2006.

For earlybirds: Ella-Rose Trew and Jacqui Cornforth will be talking about "On Course" on the ABC morning show at 7.30am Saturday 13 December with Ginger Gorman.
And On Course is on facebook.
|
Seven young choreographers from tertiary dance courses around Australia will come to Canberra over two weeks from Monday to create "On Course" - an evening of new short dance works. Several are originally from Canberra, having got their grounding in dance with QL2 Centre for Youth Dance's "Quantum Leap" ensemble.
Jamie Winbank, Emily Chapman, Caitlin McKenzie, Gemma Dawkins, Jacqui Cornforth, Ella-Rose Trew and Amanda Phillips are working with dancers Abby Johnson, Gabriel Comerford, Gabrielle Kirchner, Lucy Ingham, Luke Curry Richardson, Paul Jackson, Pia Moore, Rene Miller and Jake Kuzma.
"On Course" grew out of QL2's "Hot To Trot" program, where senior Quantum Leap dancers create short works -- seen over 29-30 November this year. Artistic Director Ruth Osborne decided to open it up to Quantum Leapers who had left Canberra to study, and wanted to 'come home' to show what they were doing. And now, dancers around Australia who have heard about it from Quantum Leapers are wanting to be part of it, so she created "On Course" specially for them.
The works will be presented in a short performance season - three shows only - over the weekend of 13 and 14 December.
6pm & 8pm Saturday 13 December,
6pm only Sunday 14 December 2008
QL2 Centre for Youth Dance Theatre
Gorman House Arts Centre, Ainslie Avenue Braddon.
$10 full, $5 concessions — tickets at the door 30 minutes before each show.
|

In the Hot to Trot young choreographers’ program, we identify up to 10 experienced Quantum Leapers who have shown choreographic aptitude, and give them space and mentoring to work with a group of dancers , producing a short work for performance at special events. This leads to a November performance season in our theatre. Targeted at Quantum Leapers interested in a dance career, it will give them significant experience to inform their choices.

Join us for a very different tour — a dance performance moving through the international art collection.
EXHIBITIONISM brings together a diverse group of young dance artists from around the country mentored by leading Australian choreographer Brian Lucas.
Working alongside a creative team of composers and Gallery staff, they have explored the gallery, responded to artworks from within its collection, and reflected on their personal experiences of “the viewing of art”.
EXHIBITIONISM is the result of their explorations and experimentations, a site-specific performance that moves throughout the gallery, revealing unique perspectives on the very personal and individual act of viewing.
EXHIBITIONISM is about the human experience within Gallery spaces, about the interface between artworks and viewers, and about the ways in which the lines between the viewer and the viewed are sometimes blurred.
Alyce Jasmine Farrell, Natalie Abbott, Elanor Webber, Laura Fishwick, Ebony Wright, Rudi Bremer, Gareth Hart, Yahna Fookes and Chimene Steele-Prior, with Artistic Director Brian Lucas and composers Nicholas Ng and Warwick Lynch.
Tours start 11am, 12 noon, 1.30pm and 2.30pm on Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September.
No booking required, but numbers are limited on each tour.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. QL2 Centre for Youth Dance is supported by the ACT Government.

MEDIA RELEASE 24 JUNE 2008
Dance and politics: “The House in motion”

Canberra’s QL2 Centre for Youth Dance has been commissioned by Old Parliament House to create a short dance performance for its relaunch as a museum exploring the past, present and future of Australian democracy. What information resides in the corridors of power? Are we as informed as we would like to be? How much freedom do we have? The work seeks to ask more questions than it answers, and explores how dance can be used to interpret and present ideas, characters and stories from Old Parliament House, making them more accessible to young audiences.
QL2 has engaged Skye Sewell from Phluxus Dance Collective as Artistic Director, together with young professional dancers Nerida Matthaei and Chafia Brooks (also from Phluxus), and Dean Cross, who are also ex-Quantum Leapers. Young Canberra dancers Jake Kuzma and Sam Maxted join them in the live performances.
Skye is developing a “perambulatory performance” where audience and dancers move through five of the historically significant sites in the building, including the Government Party Room and the Senate Opposition Party Room. She has also revealed some of the smaller spaces — the “corridors of power” — by creating a short dance film in collaboration with filmmaker Sarah Kaur (another ex-Leaper!), with 12 young dancers involved in this section. Audiences see this film in the Senate Opposition Party Room where politicians used to view films — a strange “gentleman’s club” atmosphere prevails!
Composer Nicole Canham has created a soundscape with Skye and Kimmo Vennonen, integrating snatches of politicians as well as ordinary people, and will be performing live music as well.
Skye says “This has been a great opportunity — as an artist and as a citizen of this country — to interpret and question the system which affords us the lifestyle that we experience in Australia.”
There will be two public performances of this pilot project, which will enable the staff at Old Parliament House to look at the impact of the dance works on audiences, in the very specific context of this new initiative. Performances: Saturday 28 June: public performances 11.30am & 1.30pm Places are limited. Bookings essential 6270 8282.

So some of you are wondering what on earth is this Old Parliament House project? Well, we've been commissioned by Old Parliament House to research, develop and present a short dance performance for the new "Gallery of Australian Democracy". The idea is to explore how dance can be used ti interpret and present ideas, characters and stories relevant to the Gallery, for young audiences.
We've engaged Skye Sewell from Phluxus Dance Collective as Artistic Director, together with ex-Quantum Leapers Nerrida Matthei and Chafia Brookes (also from Phluxus), and Dean Cross; as well as a group of current Quantum Leapers.
The whole project is very quick: all done by June 30! There will be 2 public performances of this pilot project, so OPH can assess whether it should be re-mounted.

Well things are in full swing with the Democracy project for Old Parliament House.
We had a very successful film shoot at OPH on the weekend and after some very long but also funny and very rewarding hours in editing, Sarah Kaur and I are about half way there with the film and it’s looking beautiful! The pre-recorded music that Nicole has been working on is sounding great, even at the rough edit stage, and I think it will add a layer of complexity and edginess to the entire performance.
We just had our second rehearsal for the choreography tonight and the first of three dance scenes is done. Phew, tick that one off the list! There’s still a heck of a lot of work to be done but I love the overall shape of the piece and my sleepless nights are paying off!

In the flesh and in online social networks, young people drive cultural change, mapping new relationships with people and cultures from around the world. Borders and boundaries, privacy and communication, tradition and transgression: is it a global village, a virtual city, a family?
In 2008, Quantum Leap is working with top interstate and local choreographers – including ex- Canberra dancer Paul Zivkovich (Australian Dance Theatre, Bonachela Dance Company London) and Paul White (Australian Dance Theatre; DV8, London,)
|
Next week the first Soft Landing gets underway, with renowned choreographer Solon Ulbrich working with 12 dance graduates from universities around Australia, many originally from Canberra. Solon will work with them to develop and perform a new dance work over the next four weeks.
