"Just a Stage" -- 38 young dancers (aged 8-16) working with professional choreographers.
10/15/2009 4:43:18 PM
Just a Stage

A new 45 minute dance work by and for young people.

Just a Stage is about youth, age, and teetering on the edge of the future.

Created by 38 young dancers (aged 8-16) working with professional choreographers.

Artistic Director: RUTH OSBORNE
Choreographers:
LIZ LEA (Lea Dance, London)  and
DEAN CROSS (Legs on the Wall) with
MICHELLE NORRIS and SIMON READ

This project is the entry point for dancers to work and develop with QL2 Centre for Youth Dance, in preparation to joining the Centre's Quantum Leap youth dance ensemble. It provides an introduction to working with a choreographer and moving beyond just "learning the steps".  Quantum Leap has produced some of the most exciting and innovative work that a young performer could be involved in, and helped young people along the path to becoming professional dance artists. But it also introduces young dancers to the process of creating new full-length dance works – the process of choreography. This is much more than just “putting steps to music” or “telling a story” — it includes thinking about concepts and emotions, creating new movement with improvisation and exercises, selecting and refining the most effective movement ideas, and of course rehearsing till it all flows. QL2 Artistic Director, Ruth Osborne, works with the ensemble to develop the skills they need to work with professional choreographers, and selects those choreographers specifically for their ability to bring out the best in young dancers — without resorting to just drilling them in ‘moves’.
